Trekking Preperation and Schedule

Typical Trekking Day

Typically the day will begin around 5.30 a.m. when bathing water and tea are brought to you.  You are advised to packup on-time so that the trekking expertise can arrange the tents and baggage during breakfast.  Every day is typically 5 to 8 hours of hiking which include moments for rest, and lunch break.  The morning walk will last approximately 3 hours. The lunch hour lasts about 2 hours and is a good time to do laundry, read, or jot down inyour journals etc. After lunch there is another 3 hours of hiking until we reach the eveing stopping point.  Hot Tea and biscuits will be served every day before dinner.

Different times of year are best for different types of excursions.  When planning a trek in Nepal it is best to choose a time of year that is most suitable to your particular excursion.  Below are some tips as when the best seasons occur:

Teahouse / camping Trekking

:

Best between February-April (Spring) and then September- December (Autumn)

Safaris

:

Best between February-May and then September-December

Kathmandu Valley

:

 All year

Rafting

:

February to end of April and then September to November

Preperation

Although this is a fun adventure, trekking requires careful prepartion according to the climate, time of year, and culture. Trekkers are encouraged to wear light clothes such as cotton trousers, track suits, and T-shirts. Trekkers are encouraged to wear shorts while hiking, but should be iformed that some Nepalese may find skin-revealling clothing a bit offensive, especially in or at their homes. Women in particular should pack a light cotton skirt in their rucksack for visiting rural homes. Often times Nepalese people in rural areas are very unfamilliar with western culture and clothing. Many people like to wear runnning shoes for trekking while others prefer light-weight walking boots.  It's a matter of preference although the latter is obviously most suitable for muddy, wet or snow-covered trials.

Unless you're trekking during Monsoon the chance of experiencing rainfall is minimal however it's better to buy an umbrella. The Samuel folding umbrellas easily fit in a rucksack and are cheap and easily available in Kathmandu. Do not forget to leave anything behind as the porters will not be moving fully loaded in daytime and without reaching the next campsite or lodge it will be impossible to replace the stuff you missed out in the previous place.
